Mon 11th Jan 2010

Foulkes calls for FMQ ShakeupLothians MSP George Foulkes has written to the Standards and Procedures Committee asking them to consider changes to First Ministers’ Questions.“A number of MSP’s, constituents and people in the media have said to me that First Minister’s Questions has become less relevant, less spontaneous and less interesting than in the past” says George Foulkes.Following this Lord Foulkes has written to the Clerk to the Committee proposing three major changes:1)     Reverting to an afternoon session to be preceded by General Questions.2)     More opportunity for spontaneous supplementary questions so issues which arise can be pursued.3)     Powers to the Presiding Officer to curtail long questions and ensure that Ministerial answers are relevant. “Critics have expressed concern at the length of questions and answers, the lack of both spontaneity and the opportunity to pursue urgent issues or aspects which might arise.”“Other MSP’s who have been here longer also recall greater public and media interest before FMQs followed PMQs to a 12 noon time slot.”
