Save Edinburgh Leisure Creches
Thu 21st Jan 2010

Thank you to all those who have contacted me regarding Edinburgh Leisure’s decision to close the remaining four crèches. The "Save our Creches Campaign" has been run extremely well and I know a great deal of pressure has been placed on Edinburgh Leisure and council officials to ensure money is secured to keep these facilities open.
I fully support the campaign and agree that these crèches provide a very valued resource that allows parents and carers to maintain a healthy lifestyle while feeling confident that the children are being well looked after. This much needed ‘me’ time is also an opportunity for parents and carers to socialise and create a network of friends and support and I share your concern about this being lost.
The previous government invested heavily in creating a more active and healthy environment for children and adults, including healthy eating initiatives and improving access to sporting facilities across the country. I am extremely disappointed and concerned that the current administration is not placing health and community services at the top of its agenda and reversing all the progress that has been made in Scotland since devolution.
I know that my colleagues Malcolm Chisholm MSP and Mark Lazarowicz MP have been making a number of representations in support of the campaign and we will all continue to put pressure on the council to ring fence money in the forthcoming budget to secure the future of these four remaining crèches.
