Over 40% of Community Service orders are breached in the Edinburgh City Council area.PROBATION ORDER BREACHES HIT 5 YEAR HIGH UNDER SNP.

Foulkes says plans to extend community sentencing are ‘DANGEROUS AND STUPID’

George Foulkes MSP today reacted to new statistics that show breaches for both probation orders and supervised attendance orders have increased in the last year. The new figures are another blow to Kenny MacAskill’s plans to scrap six-month jail sentences and replace them with non-custodial disposals.

There were 4,100 breaches of Probation Orders in 2008-09 across Scotland, a 19 per cent increase compared to the total of 3,400 in 2007-08. The most recent Official Scottish Government figures show that a third (33%) of Community Service Orders were breached across Scotland but the problem was even greater in Edinburgh rising to 41.7% - the highest level of breaches in 5 years.

George Foulkes said the figures show how badly thought out the Scottish Governments controversial sentencing plans are:

“The community service system that Kenny MacAskill wants to extend by over 12,000 places is already on its knees.

“42% of these criminals in Edinburgh don’t complete their sentences yet Kenny MacAskill is still hell bent on extending the scheme. He needs to drop these stupid and dangerous plans immediately.

“How can communities across Edinburgh have any faith in community service as alternative to prison with such significant failure rates.

“Kenny MacAskill is not just a soft touch on crime, he’s completely out of touch."
