Victory as Council u-turns on Garvald funding review After a hard fought campaign by the staff and users of Garvald Day Centre, their families, council officials and elected representatives, the City of Edinburgh Council has agreed to continue to fund all 36 people who already benefit greatly from the service. Parents and carers have been extremely distressed at the prospect of their loved ones having to walk the streets on the days they would normally be learning and integrating with others and are very relieved to learn that the decision to review the criteria for those currently using the service has been reversed. Foulkes and Boyack fight to save Garvald George Foulkes MSP and Sarah Boyack MSP are visiting Garvald Day Centre today to witness first hand why its users value the service so much following the councils' decision to no longer fund adults with learning disabilities assessed as having ‘moderate' or ‘low' support needs. The council's intention is to continue only funding those assessed as having ‘high' support needs, meaning that around 36 users, some of whom have been attending for 20 years, will be left with no support. Edinburgh City Council have today announced that following an independent review, they are to abandon their ill advised attempts to tender out the city's care services.
Volunteer groups and service users across Edinburgh will be thrilled to hear that their long fought campaign has been successful. With more news to follow, the key points of the news released today are:
· No Care and Support contracts will be awarded.
